RENAMING OF PATTERN "JUCHE" TO "CH'ANG-HON"

During the Annual General Meeting on 22 July, 2005 held in Las Vegas Nevada, the Executives of the ICTF unanimously agreed to consider renaming the Juche pattern. The reason for this is explained below. As this represents a significant change to the Legacy documents left by General Choi, the ICTF Executive Committee would like to know what the ICTF membership thinks about this.

In 1986, the ITF first introduced a new pattern called Juche, meant to replace pattern Kodang. Juche, in part, is defined as "a philosophical idea that
man is the master of everything and decides everything. In other words, it is the idea that man is the master of the world and his destiny. It is said that this idea was rooted in Baekdu Mountain….."

Upon further research in the two volume books containing articles from 1931 through 1966 called:
Kim Il Sung on Juche In Our Revolution, printed in the U.S. by Faculty Press, copyright 1977 by Guardian Associates, Library of Congress catalogue number 77-72756, ISBN 0-917654-07, Preface pg. vii, reads as follows:
"Of all the socialists countries in the world today, it is doubtful any stress the idea of independence and self-reliance in all spheres more emphatically than the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). They have a word for it — Juche. As formulated and developed by President Kim Il Sung, the concept of Juche is one of DPRK's major contributions to world revolution. The Juche idea means, in essence, that the masters of the revolution and the work of construction are the masses of the people and that they are also the motive forces of the revolution and the work of construction. In other words,
one is responsible for shaping one's destiny. President Kim Il Sung has said — "The Juche idea is based on a philosophical theory that man is master of everything and decides everything."

It is obvious from the above-mentioned research where the definition of pattern Juche has come from. As such, the ICTF will change the name, and instead, give homage to the ideals of the system now practiced world-wide, and maintain the traditional philosophy that Ch'ang-Hon Taekwon-Do is open to all regardless of race, colour or politics. The new name unanimously chosen at the 2005 ICTF AGM (Annual General Meeting) and still as the 16th pattern is: "
Ch'ang-Hon signifying blue cottage, the pen name given to the founder of Taekwon-Do by his calligraphy teacher, Han Il Dong." Also, in order to rectify a major technical flaw, pattern Ch'ang-Hon will start up on line G/H towards D, so that movements will flow in the "downwards" direction, towards the normal, permanent position of line E/F.

The change of name was made with much thought, not with the intent to be arrogant, or disrespectful, or for any other reason than to follow those neutral political ideals as set forth in the encyclopedia. The ICTF will also continue to practice and teach pattern
Kodang, as an alternate pattern, for those not able to perform pattern Ch'ang-Hon, thus still following the traditional 24 hour meaning.
