May 15, 2006
Dear Master J. Cariati VII Dan
I just wanted to send you this short note to thank you for all your help with my induction into the ICTF. I have
spent many times in discussion with Master Steiner and he has been a great help and advisor for both me and my
students. Then when I had the opportunity to spend some time at the Miami Tournament with you, my concepts of the
ICTF were confirmed.
In my 25 years of TaeKwonDo I have been involved with two other major associations and have found them to be less
than truly helpful. However, the unselfish support of Master Steiner, your support and assistance to bring me in
helped lay away all my fears. The other Senior Masters efforts to not only make me feel at home but all my students
no matter rank also made them feel comfortable with interaction at any time between students and higher ranks.
My students are always made to feel as if they are part of a family and the ICTF has made me feel as if we have
joined not an association but a larger family. I am looking forward to a very long and healthy relationship in
this outstanding organization. The ICTF is the TaeKwonDo example of what all associations should hope to be on
day.
Again, special thanks to Master Steiner and yourself in helping me find a place my students can grow to their fullest
potential.
Sincerely
Robert Piper VI Dan

2006 ICTF Florida Invitational
and Master's Seminar
April 14-15, 2006
By Aaron Fruitstone
The Master's Seminar on Friday
was attended by 75 students from the US and Canada. It began with Master Steiner covering the history and evolution
of Taekwon-Do, tracing its roots all the way back to India and China. Then, Master Parris taught fundamental drills
and some variations on step sparring. Following came Master Cariati, who taught self-defence combining joint manipulation
and control techniques with TKD striking. Following a short break, Master Simard taught sparring drills and tactics.
The seminar concluded with Master Rohde covering and demonstrating the theory of power.
On Saturday, the tournament began with Black Belt competition through 6th
Dan. Some of the US and Canada's finest competitors got the chance to show their skills. At noon, coloured belt
competition began. Simultaneous to the coloured belts, a grappling division was held, allowing students with experience
in grappling martial arts to test their skills on the mat, under Florida Federation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu rules.
In all, over 200 competitors got the opportunity to compete in an international arena. We look forward to next
year! |

APRIL 2006
"Brave
cancer patient Matthew Miller proved he is a true fighter -- in more ways than one!"
A
week after being told his leukaemia had returned for a second time, the determined schoolboy achieved a black belt
in Taekwon-Do. Matthew, 14, of Greenloons Drive, was in remission from leukaemia when he found out the cancer had
returned. He had trained hard for more than a year and was determined to achieve his belt.
Matthew, who took the exam a week before his chemotherapy started, said: "It was a shock when we found out.
We thought it would just be an infection. I decided to do it because I wouldn't have the energy levels to do it
during the treatment plus it would take twice as long and I would have had to work twice as hard. I was determined
I wanted to get it."
At age nine, he joined Formby Taekwon-Do
but stopped when he first developed leukaemia. During a year of intensive treatment he lost his hair and missed
school but pulled through and spent a further two years in maintenance therapy. He said "It made me very tired
and sick a lot of the time." But it was during a monthly check-up at Alder Hey doctors discovered his white
blood cells had decreased and tests showed the cancer had returned. Although it is in the early stages, he will
undergo six months of chemotherapy and 18 months in maintenance therapy.
The Range High student was awarded the Merseyside Aim Higher Award last year for his school achievements. For earning
his black belt his parents Sharon and Stuart bought him a laptop, which will help him keep up with his studies.
Sharon said: " I was just really proud and all the oncology staff were really proud of him. We have to be
very strong and positive. It was a big shock but we're really proud with how Matthew is handling it."
Grian Crawley, chief instructor of the Alliance Taekwon-Do Formby, said: "Matthew is a dream to teach, he
always works so hard. Everyone in the club wishes him well and our thoughts are with him." |

FEBRUARY 2006
Master Simard's School collapses
in severe weather conditions.
"We are blessed that
nobody got hurt"
WOODSTOCK LANDMARK COLLAPSES
By Heather Rivers-Harron, Staff writer Monday February 06, 2006
Reproduced with permission
from Woodstock Sentinel-Review

The Woodstock Sentinel-Review
— The roof of a Dundas Street landmark collapsed overnight Saturday, causing the internal structure to cave in.
Less than 12 hours earlier, the building had been occupied by taekwondo students, according to Dan Simard co-owner
of the Woodstock Taekwon-Do Club.
"The roof is sitting right over the mat where the training area is," Simard said at the scene Sunday.
"Saturday there was a 100 people in there for regular classes. We are blessed that nobody got hurt."
City engineer David Creery said the current state of building, which backs onto Adelaide Street, is "very
dangerous" and that weather conditions and high winds "just make things worse."
"The entire building is compromised. The east wall has collapsed and the west wall is in danger of collapsing,"
he said. "Our biggest worry is obviously the condition of the building. The walls still standing are structurally
unsound but the force of (high) winds could cause the walls to fall down."
One apartment dweller, in a nearby building, has been evacuated.
The building, located at 495 Dundas Street, was built by Edward J. Coles in 1902 and was called the E.J. Coles
Co. Later it housed the T. Eaton Co. Ltd and Reg Hall Ltd., a clothing store. "(The building) has been a landmark
for quite a few years," said Coun. Dave Nadalin. "There’s quite a bit of folklore around it. "Police
have closed off Adelaide Street at Riddell Street "until the such time the risk is removed we have to maintain
a secure perimeter," Creery said.
Creery is unsure of the cause of the collapse."We’re investigating the reason as to why," he said. "There’s
no obvious answer to that."
City officials are still trying to contact the buildings owners, Creery said.
Because of the danger "the building will be demolished as soon as possible," Creery said. Simard speculated
that water damaged may have weakened the structure. "It’s obviously due to wear and tear on the building,"
he said. Simard said his initial reaction was "shock." "Everything I had in taekwondo was in that
building," he said. "I hope I can salvage at least something that has sentimental value like pictures
or uniforms.
Oxford Community Police Service discovered the problem after an alarm went off in a nearby building, tripped by
the collapse. Creery said this is the first time he dealt with "a structural failure of this magnitude."
Sherri Stevens, owner of Stevens Resource Group, houses her offices in a building attached to the collapsed structure
located 496 Adelaide St.
Their building suffered extensive damage.
"Their double brick building fell on our building," she said. "It fell right through our roof –
we’re not sure of the integrity of our building right now." Stevens said she has contacted employees and clients
and is planning to relocate their head office to Ingersoll.
Union Gas was also called to the scene and gas service and gas metres were shut off as a precaution, according
to Jim McBride, duty manager.
Jay Heaman, manager Customer Services for Woodstock Hydro said crews were out in the early hours to isolate the
building. Crews, he added have been in contact with city engineers. Because of the return of winter weather Hydro
crews have been busy all weekend long.
Simard can only look ahead at this time. He said Sunday afternoon that he is currently looking to relocate his
taekwondo classes.
